LOCAL POLITICIANS WELCOME LAUNCH OF LARGO ARTS WEEK

Fife politicians, Jenny Gilruth MSP and Stepehen Gethins MP have praised the launch of Largo Arts Week, which starts officially tomorrow. The local representatives were attending a sneak-preview of the arts week, meeting with the Chairman and members of the steering group in Lower Largo.
The new annual community event, which takes place across Largo from 20th – 28th July, features a wide range of local artists, open studios, public artworks, music, performances, and food and drink stalls.
Included in the line-up for the week are well known local area bands Raeburn Heights and Astral Suns, and singers Charlotte Whittle, and David Mach and friends.
Several street performances and creative events are also taking place; an all-weekend-all-day street food event at The Temple Car Park, to a Raku Pottery Workshop and a “Build Your Own Robinson Crusoe Island” event on Largo Beach.
The event managers managed to fund the event through a mixture of local business and patron sponsorship, but also secures a start-up funding grant from Creative Scotland in conjunction with the National Lottery.
Speaking on the upcoming arts week, Jenny Gilruth MSP said:
“I am delighted to welcome Largo Arts Week into the area. The hard work and dedication that has gone into making this weeklong event a reality really highlights the passion from the community to showcase their local talent.
“It is fantastic that in a population of 3,000 there is so much artistic talent, and I am looking forward to catching a couple of shows and attending some events over the weekend.
“I am grateful to all who have been involved in the making of this Arts Week and I wish all the performers and artists the best of luck.”
Stephen Gethins, the MP for North East Fife added:
“Largo Arts Week is an exciting part of the social calendar in the area and I am very impressed by the breadth of talent in the local population.
“The support from local people and businesses has been first rate. This is testament to the strong feeling of community felt by local residents. I hope that all of the artists’ hard work pays off and that the Arts Week is well supported and successful.”
Commenting on the Arts Week, Chairman Douglas McMillan said:
“The Largo Arts Week event came from a desire to showcase the hidden talent within the community. The project has always been about the talent within the area and ensuring we feature the wide range of artistic work to the local community. Every artist taking part comes from the local area, 37 artists in total, which is a fantastic statement of the artistic talent within a population of around 3,000 people.
“I always wanted the event to engage everyone within the community and ensure that across the range of performers and performances there was something for everyone. We have been very fortunate to have secured sponsorship from local business and patrons and also a small start up funding grant from Creative Scotland.”
