LEVENMOUTH ELECTED MEMBERS SECURE ASSURANCES FOR RAIL LINK PROGRESS

Publised date : 23 Jan 2019

Fife’s elected members today (Wednesday) met with Scottish Government Cabinet Secretary for Transport & Infrastructure, Michael Matheson MSP in the The Scottish Parliament to discuss the ongoing campaign by the Levenmouth Rail Campaign for the reinstatement of the Levenmouth Rail Link. The meeting follows Leven MSP Jenny Gilruth’s members’ debate in Holyrood in 2017, which secured the options appraisal study from previous transport secretary, Humza Yousaf MSP.

The Cabinet Secretary provided the members with an assurance that the narrowed options appraisal will be within the next fortnight, confirming with the elected members. He said:

‘I fully recognise the ongoing efforts by elected members and campaigners for the reinstatement of the Levenmouth railway.

I can give an assurance that the reduced options from the appraisal will be agreed to within the next two weeks. The detailed options study will complete soon and that will allow a decision to be reached.’

Leven’s MSP Jenny Gilruth commented:

‘I am delighted the Cabinet Secretary agreed to meet with the Convenor of Levenmouth Area Committee, Cllr Ken Caldwell, David Torrance, Kirkcaldy’s MSP and myself as the MSP for Leven to discuss transport links in the Levenmouth area.

The Cabinet Secretary has provided us with an assurance that the narrowed options appraisal will be confirmed in the next fortnight. It is imperative a Rail Link is one of those final options; Levenmouth desperately needs this investment to improve the life chances of the next generation. A rail link for Leven will be transformational’.

Kirkcaldy MSP, David Torrance welcomed the fact the Cabinet Secretary reconfirmed his commitment on the same day in the Chamber, when asked if he would visit Levenmouth to meet with the Levenmouth Rail Campaigners. The MSP added:

‘Today was an extremely positive meeting. I am pleased to see specific timelines set for decisions to be made and look forward to seeing the options once published.

This certainly keeps the Levenmouth Rail campaign high on the political agenda and it ensures that the momentum continues, which I am know will be welcome news to the campaign group’.

Councillor Ken Caldwell, Convener of the Levenmouth Area Committee added:

‘I found this an encouraging meeting with Michael Matheson MSP. I was delighted to hear him give an assurance that the decision making process is proceeding to the final stages’.
