LEVEN MSP CALLS ON VOLUNTEERS FOR BEACH CLEAN

Jenny Gilruth MSP has called on local residents to take part in a litter pick on Leven beach Friday 14th September as part of a UK wide weekend of action.

Scottish Government Minister the Natural Environment, Mairi Gougeon MSP, is also set to join in on the action as Leven volunteers help mark the 25th anniversary of the Marine Conservation Society’s Great British Beach Clean.

Organised by Ms Gilruth, the event offers an opportunity for volunteers to protect the local marine environment while helping collate data on what is found on our shores.

Speaking ahead of the beach clean, Jenny Gilruth MSP said:

“The impact of litter, plastic and pollution on the local environment is a concern for all of the communities I represent. Our beaches are no different and with large amounts of rubbish being washed ashore it is important to take action in the effort to combat the issue.

“I am aware of a number of hard working residents who dedicate much of their own time to help clean our coastline here in Leven, and I hope this upcoming event can help raise even more awareness of the importance of our marine environment.

“I would like to offer my thanks to the Fife Coast and Countryside Trust for providing litter pickers and refuse bags.

“I am really looking forward to the beach clean and I would be delighted to see local residents take part in the day of action.”

The beach clean will take place at 11.30am, with volunteers meeting in the car-park outside Action Zone. All volunteers are welcome to arrive on the day, but are encouraged to sign up to the event at https://www.mcsuk.org/beachwatch/beach/leven-area-2/event/2018-09-14
