JENNY GILRUTH MSP VISITS SITE OF NEW £20MILLION HEAT CENTRE FROM RWE

Publised date : 17 Aug 2017

SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT PROVIDING £8.5 MILLION OF FUNDING

£8.5million of Scottish Government funding will be invested in a new district heating project at the site of the former Tullis Russell factory in Markinch.

The RWE Markinch biomass site is being upgraded to support a new ‘Glenrothes Heat’ programme. The £20million project involves demolishing part of the old Tullis Russell building which neighbours the existing RWE site, with a view to providing low cost heat to nearly 400 homes in Glenrothes.

The Scottish Government funding has been provided as part of the Low Carbon Infrastructure Transition Programme, which aims to support the development of private, public and community-led low-carbon infrastructure projects around Scotland.

Jenny Gilruth MSP welcomed the new district heating project at a visit to the RWE Markinch biomass site, meeting with new Site Manager Dr Marc Picton and his team to discuss the project and the benefits it will bring to the Mid Fife & Glenrothes constituency.

Commenting, Jenny Gilruth MSP said:

“It was a pleasure to meet Dr Picton and his team to discuss the benefits of the project, and I was pleased to hear how community-focussed the project will be. After the job losses that followed the closure of Tullis Russell, I’m particularly delighted that this project will offer more employment opportunities to local residents.

“It’s great that RWE are able to use this heat in a way which will reduce the carbon impact of energy users within the constituency, and I hope this sets a precedent for more schemes like this to be implemented throughout Scotland.”
