MSP BACKS AMBITIOUS FLAX MILL RESTORATION & LOCAL EMPLOYMENT VISION BY FEAT

Mid Fife & Glenrothes MSP Jenny Gilruth has given her backing to ambitious plans by Fife Employment Access Trust (FEAT) to renew Silverburn Park.

Jenny Gilruth MSP met representatives from FEAT at Silverburn Park to discuss the plans, which should see the B-listed former Flax Mill building restored into a hostel, cafeteria and meeting space. FEAT also hope to maintain the 27-acres of woodland in the park, and to run new events in the park for all age groups in order to attract more visitors.

Silverburn Park was gifted to the town council of Leven in the 1970s. The former activities and buildings of the park closed in the 1990s. Volunteers and a number of organisations are currently working to maintain and improve the estate, particularly in the woodland and garden areas. The Fife Historic Buildings Trust has been appointed to oversee the development of the former Flax Mill building.

Commenting, Jenny Gilruth MSP said:

“Silverburn Park has a fascinating history and huge untapped potential, so it’s genuinely fantastic to see such an ambitious project like this in Leven. Being on the Fife Coastal Path network means there’s a real opportunity for improved facilities in the Park to generate new interest in the area and to attract more visitors to Leven.

“A renewed Silveburn Park could offer new jobs for local people and would support efforts to regenerate Leven as an even better town to live and work in. We should take a lot of pride in this amazing park, so I give this project my full backing and support.”
