Glenrothes MSP praises local employer during Living Wage Week 2021

Glenrothes MSP, Jenny Gilruth, has praised Citizens Advice and Rights Fife (CARF) for their commitment to providing their employees with the real Living Wage.

Last week celebrated Living Wage Week 2021, and to mark the occasion the local politician met with representatives from the local Glenrothes branch of CARF to thank them for their contribution during Living Wage Week.

The constituency MSP met with Ms Angela Angel, Finance and Resources Manager, and team where they discussed the Living Wage, and the work that Citizens Advice employees and volunteers have been carrying out through lockdown.

Based at Pentland Court in the Saltire Centre, Citizens Advice and Rights Fife provide information and support to the people of Fife with a range of issues, such as legal, debt, consumer, housing, and many other topics.

Citizens Advice and Rights Fife sought their Living Wage accreditation in August 2015 and are committed to fulfilling the needs of their employees.

Following her visit, Jenny Gilruth MSP said:

“I am incredibly proud of the contribution that Citizens Advice and Rights Fife are doing in offering their employees the Real Living Wage, a decision that allows their employees to meet their everyday needs.

“As we celebrate Living Wage Week 2021, I would encourage other local employers to follow suit and join Citizens Advice and Rights Fife, as well as many other local businesses, in offering the real living wage. This is not only the right thing to do, but there is a growing amount of evidence which demonstrates the benefits to both businesses and employees”.

Commenting after the visit, Manager Angela Angel said:

“CARF are proud to be a Living Wage employer and part of the Living Wage Movement. We are well placed to see first-hand how low wages can adversely impact on a person, not only on their ability to heat their home or feed their family but also on their mental wellbeing.”

Notes for editors:

The real Living Wage is an independently calculated rate based on the cost of living and is paid voluntarily by employers.

The rate is currently £9.90 and is calculated each year in November by The Resolution Foundation on an analysis of the wage that employees need to earn in order to afford the basket of goods required for a decent standard of living. This basket of goods includes housing, childcare, transport and heating costs.

The real Living Wage is different to the National Living Wage which is not calculated according to what employees need to live on.
