Gilruth Joins Auchmuty Pupils to Celebrate 100 Years of Women’s Votes

MSP for Mid Fife and Glenrothes, Jenny Gilruth, joined pupils at Auchmuty High School this afternoon to celebrate 100 years of women’s right to vote.

Pupils at the school organised the event as part of the EqualiTeas festival of celebration that is running from 18th June to 2nd July across the UK to mark the important milestone in our democracy.

Auchmuty pupils took the opportunity to discuss their opinions and hopes for the future of a more equal society over a cup of tea and slice of cake with the guests.

The MSP was one of a number of guests who attended the local EqualTeas celebration, including former Presiding Officer, Tricia Marwick.

Speaking after the event, Jenny Gilruth MSP commented:

‘It was an absolute pleasure to spend Friday afternoon with senior pupils from Auchmuty. 2018 is an important milestone for all women to mark - it’s important to remember and reflect, however, that we aren’t there yet. I was really encouraged to see the next generation are so clued up about what equality means - our future is in safe hands’.

Former Presiding Officer, Tricia Marwick said:

‘It was a great opportunity to speak to the young people at Auchmuty. As the the first ever female Presiding Officer I explained to them the challenges I faced in politics and encouraged them to never underestimate their own abilities’.

The Scottish Parliament marked the centenary earlier this year by hosting a debate in the chamber opened by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon MSP.
