Published date : 07 Nov 2019

Mid Fife and Glenrothes MSP Jenny Gilruth and Kirkcaldy MSP David Torrance, recently visited Barnardo’s in Kirkcaldy to show their support for the organisation’s vital work across the Kingdom.

The meeting, which followed Ms Gilruth’s Holyrood reception on behalf of Barnardo’s in September, was a chance for both MSPs to learn more about the work of the organisation within Fife.

Barnardo’s Fife operates five services out of their Kirkcaldy office’ ranging from Children’s Rights Services to Substance Abuse Education Programmes and a Stronger Families Service.

The organisation provides advocacy, support, and rights representation to children and families throughout Fife and Scotland.

Commenting after the visit, Jenny Gilruth said:

“I was delighted to be able to visit Barnardo’s in Kirkcaldy, and highly commend the vital work being done nationally, and within Fife.

“Across Fife, Barnardo’s helps over 110 families and over 120 young people every year through their different services. Their commitment to raising awareness of issues facing young people in Scotland is to be commended.

“Barnardo’s play an integral part in the preservation of rights for Scotland’s most disadvantaged children, young people and families and I would like to extend my gratitude to all employees at Barnardo’s who work to improve the lives of so many every day.”

Kirkcaldy MSP, David Torrance, added:

“I am very supportive of Barnado’s and the services they provide across the constituency.

“The commitment and dedication of the staff and volunteers is to be commended, as their work supporting some of the most vulnerable families across Fife is invaluable; the benefit of this support is often life changing and cannot be overstated.”

The Barnardo’s Children’s Services Manager for the Fife locality, Murdo Mathers, said:

“Barnardo’s Scotland has had a base in Fife for over 20 years. The services continue to support some of the most vulnerable children, young people and their families in the Fife area.

“Our intensive family support services continue to work with children, young people and their families who present as vulnerable and in need of support to prevent family breakdown or where children have been affected by parental substance use.

“Another service works to support the local authority make decisions about the long-term future for children who have been removed from their parents care. Our Education service delivers sessions to all pupils in schools in Fife about the impact of substance use, while our Rights and Advocacy service ensures that the voice of the child is kept at the centre of decision making when decisions are being taken about their future.”
