FIFE MSP CALLS ON LOCAL WOMEN’S SPORTS GROUP TO APPLY FOR SCOTGOV FUNDING

Jenny Gilruth MSP Helps Mark Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week in Parliament.

Jenny Gilruth MSP for Mid Fife and Glenrothes has called on local projects that help women and girls take part in sport to apply for up to £30,000 in funding from the Scottish Government and Sportscotland.

Sports groups led by Scottish Governing Bodies of Sport (SGBs) or Local Authorities are being encouraged to apply for an award between £10,000 and £30,000 as part of a programme to encourage more women and girls into sport.

The announcement of project funding follows the Scottish Government’s support to help fund Scotland’s women’s national football team to train fulltime in the build-up to the 2019 women’s football World Cup in France.

Earlier this week, Ms Gilruth helped mark the second annual Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week in Holyrood.

Speaking in the chamber, the MSP highlighted the wider benefits of participation in sports.

Commenting, Jenny Gilruth MSP said:

“Taking part in sport or physical activity brings so many benefits to our physical and mental health, self-confidence, learning skills and socialising.

“Indeed, The Scottish Sports Association have found that women who take part in regular sport have a 20-40% reduced risk of breast cancer and an increase of earnings of up to 8%.

“As we celebrate Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week, this new fund announced by the Scottish Government aims to address barriers and encourage more young people to take part.

“I hope to see local women’s sports group take advantage of this amazing opportunity.”
