About Jenny Gilruth MSP


Professional background

Prior to her election in 2016, Jenny worked in Education for over a decade, most recently as Head of Department in a Fife secondary school. Prior to that, Jenny worked at Education Scotland as a National Qualifications Development Officer, supporting the development of the new qualifications. Jenny taught Modern Studies in Edinburgh, before her secondment, and is also a published author [1].

Jenny studied at Glasgow University, where she completed her undergraduate degree in Sociology and at Strathclyde University where she completed her postgraduate qualification in secondary education at Jordanhill.  She attended Madras College in St Andrews, Ceres Primary school in Fife and Aberchirder Primary school in Aberdeenshire.

Jenny lives in Fife with her partner, Kezia, and their cocker spaniel, Brodie.

Political Career

Prior to her teaching career, Jenny worked for Tricia Marwick MSP in her constituency office. She also worked as a Playworker in the east end of Glasgow, for the GOALS organisation (greater opportunity of access to learning) whilst at University, and following her graduation, for the then Scottish Executive as a graduate researcher in the Justice Department.

Jenny has been an active member of the Mid Fife and Glenrothes branch since joining the party in 2007 at the age of 22. She was also active as a member of the student wing of the party and has served on the National Executive of the Young Scots for Independence.

Jenny was first elected as the MSP for the Mid Fife and Glenrothes constituency at the 2016 Scottish Parliament. In her first term, Jenny served as a member of both the Justice Committee and Education Committee, and a substitute on the Social Security Committee.

In February 2020, Jenny joined the Scottish Government as Minister for Europe, Migration and International Development as part of a ministerial reshuffle.

In May 2021, Jenny was re-elected as the MSP for Mid Fife and Glenrothes with 18,116 votes – a majority of 10,234. Following her re-election, Jenny was appointed as Minister for Culture, Europe and International Migration.

In a ministerial reshuffle in January 2022, Jenny was appointed as Minister for Transport.
