LOCAL MSP WELCOMES PARKINSON’S CAFÉ

Glenrothes MSP Jenny Gilruth has today (29th April) visited the newly opened Parkinson’s Café in Glenrothes.
Launched by Parkinson’s UK, the café is running as a trial by the charity – offering a new style of support for people and families affected by Parkinson’s. The café is being run by 2 Parkinson’s UK volunteers, former Glenrothes MP Lindsay Roy, and Community Councillor Ron Page – both of whom have Parkinson’s.
The trial café offers the opportunity for people to meet for a coffee, a chat, and also access support in an informal setting. During the opening hours, there will be a wide range of Parkinson’s information available including details of local support. Both Lynda Kearney (an NHS Fife Parkinson nurse) and Ginny Glen (Parkinson’s UK Fife adviser) will be available to offer support and advice.
Commenting on the new charitable initiative in her constituency, Jenny Gilruth MSP, said:
“I’d like to congratulate Lindsay Roy and Ron Page for all their work in helping to establish the Parkinson’s Café in Glenrothes.
This is a really valuable initiative for people in my constituency and I would like to pay tribute to all involved in bringing it about.
There was a large turnout today from people with Parkinsons and their families, which shows the demand for support locally.”
Chloe MacMillan, Area Development Manager for Parkinson’s UK Scotland said:
“It was great to be able to welcome Jenny to the Parkinson’s café in Glenrothes so that she could meet people with Parkinson’s and their families.
The public don’t always understand how serious a condition Parkinson’s is, leaving some people and their families feeling really isolated. More than 40 people with Parkinson’s, family members and friends came along to today’s café, which shows just how important it is for people to have the opportunity to meet others informally, share experiences and get information.
We really appreciate the support that Jenny has given to this important project both locally and in the Scottish Parliament, and we know that she’ll continue to be a strong advocate for the Parkinson’s community in and around Glenrothes.”
