KINGLASSIE MSP CALLS FOR FLOOD ACTION GROUP

GROUP TO GIVE LOCALS OPEN COMMUNICATION WITH FIFE COUNCIL, SEPA AND OTHER AGENCIES

Mid Fife and Glenrothes MSP, Jenny Gilruth, is calling for the creation of a local Flood Action Group for Kinglassie after the village experienced further flooding at the weekend.

The local MSP has written to the Chief Executives of Fife Council, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), and Scottish Water to request officials’ participation in the Local Flood Action Group.

Hargreaves Land, who acquired the Westfield site in 2013, have also been invited to participate.

Calling for the establishment of a Local Flood Action Group for Kinglassie, Jenny Gilruth MSP said:

“In August, several of my constituents in Kinglassie were displaced from their homes as a result of extreme weather and, sadly, many of their homes have again been damaged after heavy rain this weekend.

“Through the establishment of a Local Flood Action Group for Kinglassie, I hope to facilitate direct communication between the community and key agencies, including the local authority and SEPA.

“The Local Flood Action Group will enable Fife Council and others to hear directly from those affected by the flooding in the village and will be an opportunity for them to set out and update local people on their action plan for flood prevention measures and responding to future weather events.

“Given ongoing coronavirus restrictions and that winter is fast approaching, my proposal is to host the first online meeting of a Local Flood Action Group at the earliest opportunity.”

“In the meantime, I would encourage any constituent affected by the flooding to get in touch for my help and advice.”

Following flooding in Kinglassie in August, Jenny has met with several constituents and is continuing to make representations to Fife Council on their response to the flooding as well as in relation to issues raised by those who were affected.

In August, Jenny wrote to Fife Council, Scottish Water, SEPA and the Scottish Government’s Environment Secretary, Roseanna Cunningham MSP, calling for cross-agency action on flood prevention measures to help minimise a recurrence of the flooding experienced in Kinglassie. The Local Flood Action Group will give the community an opportunity to hear directly from these organisations.
