JENNY GILRUTH MSP RAISES AWARENESS OF SCOTLAND’S FIRST AUTISM HOUR

Published date : 25 Sep 2017

Jenny Gilruth, MSP for Mid Fife & Glenrothes, is hoping to encourage shops and services in Mid Fife & Glenrothes to make their communities more autism-friendly by taking place in Scotland’s first-ever Autism Hour.

The National Autistic Society Scotland’s Autism Hour will see shops and services across Scotland and the rest of the UK dim their lights, turn down music and share information about autism for 60 minutes on Monday 2nd October.

A recent survey by the charity revealed that 66% of autistic people feel socially isolated, with 44% sometimes avoiding going out because of fears of how people will react to their condition.

Commenting, Jenny Gilruth MSP said: “Many of us take a trip to the shops for granted, but for autistic people it can be an overwhelming, difficult and daunting experience.

“I applaud the National Autistic Society Scotland for introducing this fantastic initiative, and I’d encourage local businesses to sign-up and take part.”
