JENNY GILRUTH MSP PRAISES VITAL WORK OF SAFE DRIVE STAY ALIVE CAMPAIGN

Jenny Gilruth, MSP for Mid Fife and Glenrothes has praised the work of the Safe Drive Stay Alive roadshow which returns to Rothes Halls tomorrow (2nd November).
The campaign, run by Fife Community Safety Partnership annually stages a thought-provoking show to deliver an important message to young drivers across Fife about the dangers of irresponsible driving.
This is achieved through hard-hitting footage of a staged car crash and first-hand, heart-wrenching accounts from serving emergency service workers, accident survivors or family members of road accident victims.
Ms Gilruth said: “The work of the Safe Drive Stay Alive team in Fife is vitally important in promoting responsible driver and passenger behaviour in order to reduce deaths and injuries on our roads.
“Since 2002, the show has been seen by over 50,000 school pupils and college students across the Kingdom and, as well as being recognised in Fife as a worthwhile initiative, the format has been adapted by other community safety partnerships throughout Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom.
“In the last 10 years, 1,852 people aged 16-25 have been injured and 39 individuals have sadly lost their lives on Fife’s roads. “Statistics show that since its launch, Safe Drive Stay Alive has contributed to a reduction in fatal accidents of 45% as well as a reduction in serious accidents by 60%.
“I would like to praise the work of all those involved in this campaign, in particular all the emergency service volunteers who so selflessly offer their time to educate young drivers about the dangers of unsafe driving through their own, sometimes very painful, personal experiences.
“I would also like to thank all the individuals involved in the show, past and present, who have been either directly or indirectly involved in road accidents, for their bravery in choosing to share their stories with others in a bid to cut the road accident rate in Fife and encourage young drivers to drive more safely on our roads.”
