GLENROTHES MSP TURNS MILES INTO SMILES FOR TOWN’S CHILDREN AT CHRISTMAS

Published date : 23 Dec 2020

Local politician’s December running challenge raises over £1,500 for ADTRA’s Christmas Appeal

Mid Fife and Glenrothes MSP has fundraised over £1,500 for Auchmuty and Dovecot Tenants’ and Residents’ Association’s Christmas Appeal, which aims to ensure every child in Glenrothes has a present to open on Christmas Day.

The town’s MSP has taken on this year’s Marcothon challenge, running 5 kilometres every day this month in all manners of weather, to help ADTRA more than treble their fundraising target of £500.

The MSP has been encouraging local people and businesses to give their support to this year’s appeal so that every child in the town has a present to open on Christmas Day.

Running for ADTRA’s Christmas Appeal is the fifth fundraising event undertaken by the local politician who, since her election in 2016, has also raised money to support Homestart Glenrothes, Fife Women’s Aid, Love Oliver and the Glenrothes Marie Curie Fundraising team.

During lockdown this year, ADTRA provided meals and activity packs to over 4,500 children. All packs were carefully put together by their socially distanced volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure everyone was accommodated. They used their new Community Bus to deliver the meals and the activity bags.

This Christmas, ADTRA are again providing lunch packs along with presents. Each year they provide gifts for all children they have listed, and their list has more than trebled this year.

ADTRA try to make the process personal for parents by giving the gift and the wrapping paper to allow them to feel part of the process, and to take on the “Santa role”.

Speaking after a socially distanced visit to ADTRA, Jenny Gilruth MSP said:

“I’m delighted that local people and businesses have rallied round ADTRA’s appeal to help Donna and her team provide presents for every child in the town this Christmas. This is yet another example of the strength of our community spirit here in Glenrothes. Thank you to everyone who has donated.

“Running every day has been quite the challenge this month given how variable the weather has been, but the thought of smiles on faces of our children kept me going even in the snow. ADTRA have received more requests for help this year than ever before due to the challenges posed by Covid and I know their help at Christmas will be welcomed by families around the town.”

Donna Morrison, Christmas Campaign Manager at ADTRA, said:

“We are thrilled to have had the support of our local MSP Jenny Gilruth for this year’s appeal. Jenny’s efforts have more than trebled our initial fundraising target, which means we’ve been able to help more families than ever before.

“This year has been the hardest year everyone has had to face in their lifetime. We’ve already distributed over 250 lunch packs along with presents for local families and children this Christmas. Come Christmas morning, the support from Jenny and donations from the public will have helped dreams come true for so many children in Glenrothes. Thank you to everyone who has donated.”
