JENNY GILRUTH MSP PRESENTS AWARD TO MARKINCH NURSERY

Published date : 02 Sep 2016

Mid Fife & Glenrothes MSP, Jenny Gilruth, this week paid a visit to Peek-a-Boo Nursery in Markinch to present them with a £500 cheque as their prize for winning the Great Glenrothes Hippo Parade organised by the Kingdom Shopping Centre.

Youngsters at schools and nurseries throughout the local area had been tasked with painting one of 25 fibreglass hippos, which were then displayed in the Kingdom Shopping centre. This year’s design theme was story book characters The competition aimed to pay tribute to Stanley Bonnar’s original hippo designs which were installed in Glenrothes in the 1970’s, and went on to become one of the town’s most treasured and iconic art installations.

Commenting on the success of the competition, Jenny Gilruth MSP said:

“This has been a fantastic competition, which has engaged youngsters from throughout the local area. I’d like to thank the Kingdom Shopping centre for organising such a unique and inspiring competition.”

The Mid Fife and Glenrothes MSP was also full of praise for the Peek-a-Boo nursery’s winning entry, and this week recognised the nursery’s success in a parliamentary motion. She added:

“The creativity of the winning entry from Peek-a-Boo Nursery is outstanding. I’d like to offer my congratulations to all those involved in the design and execution of the finished piece.

Louise Baillie General Manager at Peek-a-Boo nursery said:

“Staff and children at Peek-a-Boo Nursery Markinch were delighted, and a little shocked, to find out we were the winners of The Great Glenrothes Hippo Parade 2016. This year’s theme was Favourite Story Book Characters and the children in our Busy Bee Room (age 3-5 years) chose Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs as their favourite story books. Katrina, Nursery Practitioner, came up with a design along with the children which combined characters from both stories and that is how we came up with Gobbled Granny.

She went on: “The children put a lot of hard work and effort into bringing Gobbled Granny to life and enjoyed going to the launch party at the Kingdom Centre. We were pleased to welcome everyone who came along to present us with the winning cheque to the nursery and the children thoroughly enjoyed showing off our winning hippo.”

Commenting on the competition and the Prize Giving ceremony, Robert Winter from the Kingdom Shopping Centre said:

“The 2016 hippo parade delivered some fantastic hippo stories. I was delighted that we had two new winners this year with Peek-a-Boo Nursey and Pitlessie primary. Well done to both”
