JENNY GILRUTH MSP WELCOMES NEXT STEPS IN EDUCATION GOVERNANCE REVIEW

“These next steps in our education governance review make good on our pledge to transform Scotland’s education system.
“Our plans will give new powers to schools across the country, and put the interests of our children at the very heart of the school system. Schools and teachers will have the ability to make the key decisions over their schools, based on the simple premise that those working closest with young people, parents and communities are those best placed to make the key decisions about our young people.
“The new Headteachers Charter will give headteachers across Scotland new powers to choose school staff and the management structure, to decide the content of their school curriculum within a broad national framework, and to directly control more school funding. The reforms are also enhancing our parent councils – giving parents a stronger say over their children’s schools.
“And we will ensure that children and young people’s voices are heard as well, by promoting and supporting pupil participation, and ensuring every school has a teacher or professional responsible for promoting parental, family and community engagement.
“Our schools will be backed up by three key pillars of support – which include enhanced career and development opportunities for teachers; new regional improvement projects to give greater support to teachers and allow the sharing of best practice; and provision of educational support services from local councils.
“And the Governance Review has also set in motion the reforming of national agencies to support this new system – which will involve consulting on a new Education Work Force Council for Scotland and establishing a Scottish Education Council, taking a system-wide focus on improvement.
“The SNP has been upfront and frank about the challenges we face in our education system as we seek to raise standards, close the attainment gap and make our education system the best in the world – and our investment of £120 million in the Pupil Equity Fund and £750 million in the Attainment Scotland Fund is evidence of our ongoing action.
“It makes sense to put the power to change lives directly in the hands of those with the expertise and insight to target resources at the greatest need.
“These reforms will improve learning and teaching by giving schools more freedom and ensuring they are equipped to do what they do best – transform the life chances of our children.”
